Something significant happened today; the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran. Why? Let's talk about it.
Today, February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched "Operation Epic Fury," a joint military operation against Iran.
For some context, in 2025, Iran significantly expanded its nuclear program; in fact, its uranium stockpiles have far exceeded the limits set by the 2015 JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action). Iran insists it continues to advance its nuclear program for "peaceful purposes," though many geopolitical figures are skeptical.
Although surprising to the public, according to a Reuters article about the attack, an Israeli defence official stated that today's operation "had been planned for months in coordination with Washington, and that the launch date was decided weeks ago."
This past June, "the most direct American military action ever against the Islamic Republic" occurred when the U.S. joined an Israeli military campaign against Iranian nuclear installations. Tehran is the capital and largest city of Iran; it's home for most of Iran's nuclear operations. The city retaliated the Israeli military campaign by "launching missiles toward the U.S. Al Udeid air base in Qatar, the largest in the Middle East."
Thus, a major objective of today's attack was to destroy Iran's missile potential. Iran poses to be an imminent threat to countries worldwide, and the U.S. and Israel want to get rid of this threat.
Moreover, this afternoon, Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was announced dead after the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) hit a compound in Tehran. Also, the Iranian Red Crescent announced that "more than 200 people have been killed" as a result of jthe oint Israeli-American airstrikes.
There's no official end date for the strikes, so it's difficult to predict when it'll end.
